A Thank You Note

It's been three weeks since we released Evernight and we have all been blown away by your kindness! I know I speak for every member of the team when I say we're so grateful to each and every one of you that has taken the time to play our game, to rate it, and to leave us such sweet comments. For many of us, this was our first project, and we couldn't have asked for a warmer reception. Thank you so much!

If I may, I'd like to take a moment to brag on my team.

Mini, our background artist, had tons of backgrounds to draw, but she worked so quickly and so diligently to create such beautiful scenes, and she was always open to feedback and quick with revisions. I feel like background artists sometimes get lost in the (pardon the pun) background of VN development. Backgrounds are there to set the scene, but ideally shouldn't draw the eye from the action. But without them, something vital would be missing from the game: the world. So I just want to applaud Mini for her amazing work bringing the Night Realm to life!

Lisa, our composer, friggin' scored our game like a movie. She is incredible! Because she couldn't do too much until the full picture started coming together, she did much of her composing in the last few weeks, and wow, she knocked it out of the park with every piece. It was always such a joy to listen to her drafts, to hear how they evolved, to experience the full effect of every track when I was coding them in. I have zero musical talent whatsoever and am quite inarticulate when it comes to communicating my thoughts about music, so she deserves so much praise for not only her impressive sound design but also successfully deciphering my thoughts!

Kas, our editor, was a vital part of the writing process. 91k words is a lot to edit in such a short amount of time (and while co-writing for another game, so please check out Potion Panik if you haven't already cause it's amazing!), but she was always so quick to jump in and begin editing. It took me six weeks to write the script, and every time I posted a chapter, she was on top of it! She really helped me tighten the script to be clear and concise, offered amazing suggestions, and talked me through the moments when I was struggling on how to tackle a particular scene. As a writer, I always want to present my best work, and that would have been impossible without Kas backing me up. I'm so grateful for her!

WaterWays came to our team pretty late in the game when I made an emergency recruitment post. They designed such an amazing logo for us in such a short time and I can't imagine Evernight without it! It's beautiful, delicate, and elegant, and I can't wait to see their future designs as more developers take notice of their awesome skill!

These guys really deserve so much praise. I am sure most jam participants can attest to a similar experience when I say that it was not an easy two months. There were a lot of ups and downs. Due to real life being unexpectedly busy, we lost our sprite artist around the end of May and we lost our GUI artist in the first week of June. But if the team felt demoralized, they never showed it and it never impacted their work. If you find yourself on a team with any of these individuals in the future, please know you are in good hands with them!

So thank you to my amazing team for working with me on this project! It was a pleasure!

Finally, as the writer, I just want to say how honored I am by all the love expressed for Evernight. There were many moments throughout the development process when I was afraid that maybe I had written the script too fast and in too short of time, and it wasn't any good! As we were approaching the submission deadline, I remember saying to Kas that I was afraid no one would play the game. I was determined to be proud just to have finished a game and put it out there because that is a victory on its own, but when you work hard on something, you still hope it will be loved by someone other than you. So all of the positive ratings and every single comment has meant the absolute world to me! You have melted my heart to marshmallow fluff and given me the confidence to keep on creating.

Thank you so much to all of you for playing Evernight! And I hope to see you in the Night Realm again someday...
